Scholarships
Elementary School: Many Maasai families cannot afford
to send their children to school; at least not for all of their children.
Uniforms and testing fees cost the parents approximately $50 per student,
per year. We are also promoting partial sponsorship, where the
parents would pay for half of the costs associated with school.
High School: To encourage children to go to high
school after eighth grade, MWCT awards four year scholarships to the
best students. The scholarships have been meaningful in raising the
enrollment. The high schools are typically too far away for the
students to return to their villages each night. Thus, our scholarships
cover room and board in addition to school fees. Currently, we
are supporting fourteen students in their secondary education.
Less than 1% of the Maasai families can afford to send their children
to high school and typically sell cows to pay school fees. The
enrollment goes down with the higher grades because parents who send
children to school for the first year, often find that the fees are
unaffordable for the remaining years. A four year scholship for high
school costs approximately $3,000 per student.
University: As the children that MWCT has supported
educationally grow, so do our goals. We would like to begin college
level scholarships to worthy students who have made it to that level
in their education.
