Scholarships
Elementary School: Despite the introduction in 2003 of free primary school education in Kenya , many Maasai families cannot afford to send their children to school, especially with each family averaging over 5 children per household. Uniforms and testing fees cost the parents approximately $50 per student, per year. A donation of this amount can sustain the education of a child, and provide an equal opportunity to someone who may be underprivileged.
High School: To encourage children to go to high school after eighth grade, MWCT awards four year merit scholarships to the best students based on results of a standard exam given in the eighth grade. Offering these scholarships has been extremely beneficial to the students who receive them, and allows them an opportunity for the continuation of education that most Maasai cannot afford, This means that most students stop attending school after the eighth grade.
Currently, with help from generous donors, we are supporting twenty one students in their secondary education. Scholarship donors will have the opportunity to communicate with their sponsored students via letters which are written each term, and will also receive school reports to keep track of the students’ progress.
A four year scholarship for high school costs approximately $3,000 per student, but is an invaluable gift and has the potential to completely change the life of a local child.
