Teachers

MWCT currently pays the salaries of forty elementary school teachers located in fourteen different schools, throughout the reserve. Teachers are monitored for their performance and to ensure that the children in their classes are doing well. These fourteen schools are all run by the government but are not staffed with enough teachers for each class. We have also found that the teachers hired by the government tend to be from other tribes and discourage the students from using their mother-tongue. Education does not have to mean that the Maasai children lose their culture. In fact, we strongly believe that the Maasai children should grow up enriched by traditional culture. We employ two Maasai elders to teach the school children their traditions. The elders are especially important because Maa is not a written language. So, the culture must be verbally handed down from generation to generation.
