The Conservation Value
Having collars on lions helps us understanding their movements, their
predation patterns and also their whereabouts. All these help to prevent
people from carrying out illegal killing of lions. Having more personnel
in the field (carrying out monitoring) tends to facilitate communication
between community members and conservationists, enabling the rapid identification
of problem animals, or problem areas.
The simple act of employing people in direct proportion to the number
of lions seems to engender a kind of sense of ownership or pride in
the lions that we have left. In Kuku Group Ranch the employment of 8
simba scouts has probably been the key to an overwhelming change of
attitude towards lions, as evidenced by public statements by people
that they will no longer kill lions.
