Protected Conservation
Through the work of MWCT, the Kuku Group Ranch Maasai are engaged in the concept of conservation areas and recently agreed to set aside a part of their land for conservation. The significance of this accomplishment cannot be overstated. As the population of the world grows exponentially, we are watching nature and wildlife decline at a rapid speed. By achieving a conservation area, we will be ensuring the preservation of one of the earth’s most untouched, diverse ecosystems, and, prospectively, the fascinating traditions of the Maasai people within the land. Funding is greatly needed to make the conservation area a reality and a model for the future.
With funding assistance from the MWCF, and by educating the local Maasai on the long term benefits of conservation areas, we hope to achieve the following project goals:
- Create conservancy zones to preserve wilderness, protect wildlife and maintain critical migration corridors
- Protect access to springs and other natural water sources for wildlife
- Help limit conflicts where livestock, human beings and wildlife compete for the same sources of water
- Promote sustainable agriculture strategies within the community
