Protected Conservation
MWCT operates in one of Africa’s last wilderness areas. The Group Ranch ranges from dry savanna grasslands at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro to cloud forests reaching 7,000 feet in the Chyulu Hills. The biodiversity is truly astounding with more than 1,000 different plant species, more than 400 bird species and over 60 big mammals. However, as the population of the world grows exponentially, we are watching nature and wildlife decline at a rapid speed. By achieving protected conservation areas, we are ensuring the preservation of one of the earth’s most diverse ecosystems, and, prospectively, the fascinating traditions of the Maasai people within the land. The Kuku Group Ranch Maasai are in agreement with the concept of conservation areas and recently agreed to set aside parts of their land as conservation areas. Funding is greatly needed to expand the conservation areas and create a replicable model for the future.
